This is my first Hardy Boys novel and it is absolutely bonkers. Almost every chapter ends with the brothers narrowly escaping death. They are fired at multiple times, chloroformed, and dodge a car dropped from a cliff. Then they come home and their mother is like “Well I’m glad you were careful.”
Still, no one gets it worse than their fat friend Chet, who is absolutely roasted by the whole town for being vegetarian. I hope he’s featured in more of these stories. What a monster!

When I first read Hardy Boys, I think I was in class 5, I had such a crush on Frank Hardy. I liked the brainy one over the brawny one and that sums up my first impression of Hardy Boys.
In their late teens, Frank and Joe Hardy take after their detective father Fenton Hardy. Frank is the older of the two and has more breakthroughs in the cases because he is the brainy one. Joe is the younger brother who more often than not is useful when things get hot and they need to fight their way out.
Like Nancy Drew, the books in the The Hardy Boys series re written by ghostwriters under the collective pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon. And yes, the earlier books were better than the latter ones.

Maybe I would've liked this if I were still nine years old. I realize this is a kids' book anyway, but the dialogue was so typical of a 1950's sitcom that I died inside a little bit. But hey, at least now I can say I've read a Hardy Boys book. (Even if it wasn't an original edition.)
This one was a pretty good mystery and had some good action sequences too.
