I loved The Good Lord Bird but this book didn't measure up. McBride's inner city dialogue was about as authentic las any written by some white guy from Rhode Island. Disappointing because I really wanted to like it.

The last quarter of the book made up for the first three quarters. I rotated between hating and loving the characters and I’m not sure what this book was really about but it was fine?

A unique work of fiction. The author, James McBride creates such colorful, wonderful characters. The words he put in their mouths had me chuckling to myself time and again. It had a few slow moments but was never boring, never predictable. Kind of sad to have it end.
