Stopped reading due to “reading deprivation “ week with Artists Way program, and just lost the thread so much that I’d have to start over, so will do another time . Need a shorter lighter fiction book while doing The Artists Way, in other words.
Listened to the audio, which really enhanced the story. A great cast of characters I really came to love. It was a slow burn, not sure what was happening or where the story was going at first. And then it came together and finished with humor and grace. I will definitely be reading more of McBride’s books.

A great read - loved all of the characters and their stories and mostly their epic nick names. By the end, all mysteries are resolved and finishes with a wonderful and happy ending.

This is an Obama best book, Oprah pick, and NYT best 10 books of 2020, so I had high hopes, and had planned to read something by James McBride this year. Perhaps it was a mistake to start with this one.
It has to be me because this book is so beloved but I struggled to keep picking this up. I found it overly sentimental and almost goofy/eye-rolling. I don’t think it said anything useful about the time period, which is a shame. It sanitized the violence, poverty, and racism of the time. I just truly hated this book and feel betrayed by the people who recommended it.
