James McBride is a storyteller with a point to make, and I really appreciate that he delivers his antiracist and antibigotry messages through a cast of characters. Sportcoat is struggling with grief and loss in his impoverished community. He turns to alcohol to cope, and also unwittingly sets a course of events into motion that is sad, uplifting and humorous - depending on my mood as the reader. This is a story of survival through systemic racism and overcoming tragedy by coming together. My recommendation is to space apart the reading of two of his novels, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and Deacon King Kong, as they are so thematically similar the story unfortunately felt repetitive in some ways. 3.5/5 stars.

Love a good story well told

Great read. It took a little energy to work through the early part of the book. Once it got going, I couldn't put it down.

Humane and charitable. My first, but not last, James McBride. I was taken in by all the characters. Highly recommend.
