It took me a minute to get into it, but the last half of the book flew by.
This was an excellent book. Certain elements were so descriptive. I particularly enjoyed how it somehow gradually turned into a mystery with a very subtle love story engrained. I guess two love stories. Highly recommended.

Excellent caper, with a great range of characters - Hot Sausage is one of the many excellent names. Changes in the communities in late 60's New York are the background for a sharp, funny book.
If you are a lover of fantastic writing, a world and characters you fall in love with, cheer for, love and then hate and love again read- this book. It is one of the best I have read in a long time. James McBride magically weaves his character’s stories through time and space. This is a human story, a beautiful and moving story, a story that makes you stop and really think about the lives of others while contemplating your own life story . Read on!

A great story. The author does a great job of weaving all the character stories together. I did figure out where the box was super early in the novel and it was so frustrating that it took the characters so long to figure it out. The book was also a tad long. But I could just see my clients in so many of the characters-which helped add to the believability of the story. It does have pockets where there is a lot of language so make sure to listen with earbuds in if little ears are around.
