This took me awhile to get into. I would say about 54% of the way into the book, it finally picked up for me. I did love the characters and the story they told but man it took awhile to get there. Overall an enjoyable read.
What a story!!! It was slow to start but I became so invested in the characters by about halfway through the book. I highly recommend the audiobook because it helped me keep up with the conversations between the characters. There is a lot of dialogue which kept things interesting.

Like other reviews, I really wanted to stop reading this book so many times. I got halfway through and still felt like it was moving slow. But holy cow, as soon as it picked up - I was hooked. What a beautiful story and so nicely woven into an interesting, funny, and heartwarming book. This absolutely deserves the National Book Award - and I am so glad I didn't stop reading.
This was quite a novel! It was so well written and plotted, and the humor reminded me of [b:A Confederacy of Dunces|310612|A Confederacy of Dunces|John Kennedy Toole|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562554946l/310612._SY75_.jpg|968084] but high-brow. It was a little hard to follow because of the multiple perspectives and the way they're woven together, but I eventually got it straightened out in my mind in the last half of the book. It really paints a clear picture of Brooklyn in the late sixties and the obstacles faced by the Black Americans (and other POC) who lived in the housing projects, as well as the ruinous culture of drugs brought in by the mafia. Lots of threads in this story and all powerful. A wonderful ending, to boot!
