I love the balance of serious and silly as Sportcoat and the various members of the Cause House projects deal with the consequences of Sportcoat drunkenly shooting the ear off the teenaged drug dealer who used to be his protege. Each character has a distinct personality and life, with church folks mingling with Italian gangsters and Irish cops.

James McBride loves his characters and I get the feeling that he is filled with love for humanity in general. His love extends to people who commit crimes to get by but mean no harm and people who are caught up in illegal enterprises that do hurt other people but are worth saving. McBride, it seems to be, believes that many of us, most of us, maybe all of us are worth saving. And he envisions a society where we can all live side by side peaceably and love each other (sometimes literally).

I loved The Color of Water and of all McBride's books that I have read, I think about that one the most. It is nice to read an author's vision of a world where racial hatred is set aside especially today.

What a fantastic novel. Humane and encompassing in the best ways.

Excellent. I felt that some of the moments individually shone brighter than the overall novel, but the whole thing is still incredibly well done.

Loved this little story. Nothing too deep or crazy here, read similar to a sitcom I feel, but still had enough range to be investing. The characters were fun and likable (even though there were many). Lots of dialogue - may not be for everyone.

Great read...Not a usual fiction reader, but the way this story was painted you could just see everything clearly. Heard it’s being adapted into a tv series, hopefully they don’t mess this great story up!
