I just couldn't get engaged with this story line. #itsnotyouitsme
The one star is inadvertent and should be 4. A slow start to the book and at times I lost interest in the book. However, I grew to reading enjoy the book. The complex character relationships were great. This book is also a reminder that we don't always remember things exactly the way they happened. Definitely recommend.

There is a lot going on in this book. It has tons of plot lines, that all mean to go in different directions: The crime story, the social drama, the love story and even a treasure hunt.
A very lightheartedly written story about a certain reality of live that is not lighthearted at all.
I picked this book completely by accident and though I usually read things very different from this, I enjoyed it quite a bit. So if you are unsure: It is worth a look.

My husband and I decided to read this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. I wasn't sure what to expect and started it well after my husband. The book is an interesting read with colorful characters and unique intertwining of lives from different backgrounds. It wasn't a hard read but it is one you should not mix with other readings simply because there is a barrage of characters and stories to follow. I did enjoy this book and am looking forward to some lively discussion about it.
James McBride is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book was something special. His storytelling writing style is dialog-driven, making the reader feel like they are right there among his unique characters. There were some complex twists to this plot that added depth and dark humor. Hot Sausage and Sportcoat, I will miss you guys now that I'm done with this reading journey!
The best story I have read in a very long time. I loved this book!
I loved this book. It was a lot of characters, however I got to know all of them. The story woven between the characters was brilliant.
Though not a mystery in the whodunit sense, this story is similar in the way it unravels the secrets of several people living in a Brooklyn neighborhood in the late sixties and then puts together the pieces of their shared history. Heavy on dialect, plenty of humor, and written with warmth.
You can tell after reading just one chapter of this book, that you are in for something special. Very colorful characters, wonderful dialog and a couple of mysteries to boot! Plus a glimpse into New York City poor black neighborhoods in 1969. The book works on so many levels, including, I'm sure, quite a few I missed as I just enjoyed the rollicking fun.
