Honestly surprisingly not bad for an 18th century novel. Pretty funny at times and if you’re in HIST 3482 reading this hmu for some good analysis of the impact of social status on 18th century life in Britain

It had its high points and I liked the ending, but would not have chosen this for myself were it not assigned reading for a class.

Interesting look at what 18th century novels were like. Not great by my personal tastes.

Could not get through. Was trying to get through it for the 1001 books to read before you die list.

A good travel log read. I could use less of the romantic adventures, young men spending pages telling the reader of his unrequited love for his lady. But a good read never the less. Also a very shallow base. what is written is what you get and there is not much of a underlying lesson in this one. But, like I said a good adventure read.

Structural snobbery (on my end): chapters shouldn't routinely be multipage single paragraphs.

I've read 1 other book by Smollett, [b:The Expedition of Humphry Clinker|415836|The Expedition of Humphry Clinker|Tobias Smollett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1344373373l/415836._SY75_.jpg|502618], and found that these 2 seem to be rather similar in formula. They are an 'adventure' type of stories in which a young gentleman seeking his fortune. So, he travels and at times, Lady Luck is with him and other times, not. He meets some good loyal friends and others not so generous. Though as soon as he meets someone new, I expected him to be either duped and/or robbed not long after. If not, then some pride and/or temper of his will end in a duel of some sort.

It was rather interesting to start with, got a little repetitive in the middle, and in the end, well, it's HEA. I guess if it was published as a weekly instalment of stories, this would be an entertaining highlight for the week but reading it all in a novel - I couldn't wait for it to finish. Although, I did find some amusing descriptions... *excuse me for my rather childish humour*

I hung over her beauties—beheld her eyes sparkle, and every feature flush with virtuous fondness—when I saw her enchanting bosom heave with undissembled rapture, ...

...her looks glowed with modesty and love; and her bosom, through the veil of gauze that shaded it, afforded a prospect of Elysium!
