A fun concept and a quick, light read. Only issue was the very long, meandering 'climax' of the book, if that had been condensed then I'd have given it a 4 star rating. I'll definitely be reading the next in the series.

This is not YA, though the author does write YA books.

I ended up really enjoying this book. I think what really drew me in was the world in which this book is set and the writing style. I really enjoyed the book Night Circus and this has a very similar feel to it, its both magical and enchanting. The only reason I could not give this 5 stars is that it was a little slow at parts, I want to know how exactly Ceony got in the heart, and I didn't like the romance(not lira and Emery, but the other one) I just don't enjoy teacher student love, plus the age gap was a little to big for my taste.
All in all I really enjoyed this book and plan on continuing with the series.

Oh my god I wanted to do a review for this but completely forgot.

It was really good at the beginning and okay at the end, but getting into Thane's heart was way too repetitive. I only hope knowing him this deep will do something in the plot of the following books. Also I'm not there for the romance what the fuck Ceony he's like 12 years older than you shut up

This book started out REALLY slow. Early on I felt like I was missing some key piece of information. I'm not sure what information I needed, but I never really got it. Once Ceony started learning her craft it got a little more interesting. I thought that all of the animation spells were really enchanting.

Eventually the spells got old, and I found myself wishing for more action. I guess I got more action, but I honestly have no clue what happened. It went from slightly slow and boring to weird. Because there wasn't a gradual change I was left confused. The later half of the book Ceony is stuck in Thane's heart, which brought me back to the feeling like I was missing some key information. I ended up losing interest because I was just so confused. I really had to force myself to finish this book, and as soon as I read the words on the page they left my brain. I probably won't be reading the other two books in the series. Based on the ratings a lot of people seem to like it, but it's just not for me.

This book is well written but lags immensely when it's supposed to kick into action. After an enjoyable wind up of Ceony falling under the paper tutelage of Magician Thane, she must now save his life from his ex-wife and excisioner, Lira. When the time actually comes for the saving, it's a total complete let down. I forced myself to finish and frankly, I skimmed pages get past a lot of the irrelevant action scenes the author included. Won't be continuing this series.

I've been interested to read this book since it came out. I was on the staff of the Leading Edge Magazine with the author in college, so I was aware of the book before it came out. I found this book to be well written. The story and characters drew me in and it was difficult to put it down. There was more blood and gore than I'm comfortable with, but other than that I enjoyed reading it. Parts of the backstory were revealed bit by bit. That along with the pacing of the action made it difficult to put down. The magic system is interesting, and I look forward to reading the other books in the trilogy.
