Proud, stubborn, prickly Maggie brought me to tears. Which she would hate, she’s not a fan of showing any sign of weakness. Maggie has been through a lot, most of it at the hands and sharp tongue of her mother. But Maggie’s da and her sister Brianna have always supported her 100% whether she sees it or not. Her insecurities run so deeply about certain things, and her walls have gotten so high and thick, that she can’t always see the forest for the trees.
Rogan is almost as stubborn as Maggie and carries a confidence that is a bit of his downfall for him at times. Especially when it comes to Maggie. He may have a lot more than Maggie when it comes to loving role models and money, but life hasn’t been all roses for him. That ends up giving him the touch of humanity I needed to see as a reader to root for him.
While Maggie and Rogan are great together and I got a nice warm feeling about the couple, I must admit I felt more sparks between a couple of side characters than I did with the main characters. That didn’t stop me from hoping they’d find their way. As I said, they are a wonderful couple.
Maggie’s emotional journey held my attention and heart enough for me to not miss the fireworks when it came to her and Rogan. Once the author started peeling back her layers and showing those insecurities, she clenched my heart and made me want to hug her.
Of course, everyone knows who Nora Robers is, even those who don’t read romance. Somehow, this is only the second contemporary romance I’ve read by this author. I’ve read quite a few of her JD Robb In Death books and loved them. She has a way with words and does a beautiful job setting a scene. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series and hope to read more of her books soon.
