hello. i hope somebody is listening.

now officially one of my favourite books ever. thank you alice oseman. this story was amazing and also comforting in a way. the character of frances reminded me of myself and thus, some things were hitting a little too close to home... i will cherish this book and its characters forever because they are (now) a part of me.

"Radio Silence" follows the story of Frances, a studious high school senior who is focused on achieving academic success. When she meets Aled, the reclusive creator of her favourite podcast, her world is turned upside down.
As they bond over their shared love for a fictional universe, frances discovers a side of herself she never knew existed. Together, they navigate the pressures of school, friendship and family, while confronting their own fears and insecurities.
"Radio Silence" is a heartwarming tale of friendship, identity and the courage to be true to oneself.

I did not like this book that much. I found the main character insufferable, especially when talking about school and grades. I understand the point was for her to eventually come to terms with grades not being everything, but even then it was too last minute after a long book her babbling on about how great her grades are, how terrible everyone else's grades are, and how badly she wants to go to Cambridge. Why? We never even got her development process, just an instant 'I'm
scared I'm going to make the same mistake' and a chnage of heart.

I liked Aled, he was an interesting character. I wish we had something more when he was reunited with his sister. I don't think the portrayal of his mother was great. She was painted more like Mother Gothel rather than as a real abusive parent.

Aled's struggles with mental health were interesting… and not in a good way. I just think the portrayal could have been less stereotypical, the damsel in distress angle with the whole entourage coming to save him was dramatic at best, completely unrealistic and tone deaf at worst. 5 people pulling up and telling you to come with them does not cure depression.

The end chapter was nice. The outcome of Aled sustaining himself off youtube seemed to be the obvious solution all along, it's a shame it was only addressed at the very end as means of a happy ending.

I want to say I would have liked this as a teenager but I probably wouldn't have. I thought being grade centred was as insufferable then as I do now.
