I love that you can SEE the music in the illustrations.

Troy Andrews’s boyhood reminiscences of growing up in New Orleans, along with the nickname his older brother gave him when the four-year-old Troy marched down the street with an old trombone twice as big as he was tall was published with gorgeous watercolor and collage illustrations by Bryan Collier in 2015 and subsequently won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator award the next year as well as a Caldecott honor. This year the audio version read by Dion Graham added another honor, and Odyssey honor for audiobook production. In addition to Graham’s lively narration, it’s enhanced with a backing of subtle sound effects and refrains of “When the Saints Go Marching In” and Andrews’s own composition “Big 12” performed by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. It's a treat to listen to this while turning the pages of the book.

Atmospheric and gorgeously illustrated. A New Orleans tale that made me want to hear music, and helped lift my mood on a grumpy gray day. Good stuff.
