This book was unlike anything else I’ve read in terms of writing style. It was exquisite and tragic and showed you the good and the deep, deep flaws and the heartbreak in the lives of three people. I feel like I have so much more I want to say but I can’t find the words right now. It’s definitely not a quick read as its characters are so beautifully complex. But it’s worth the read.

This book started off strong for me, but I had a hard time reading about the ongoing child abuse relationship. Particularly midway through the book, it became difficult to pick back up and finish. The writing and story is creative and I appreciate the cultural Maori perspective. But I didn’t like the main characters and it was hard to keep reading about their abuse with both alcohol and the child. I’m sure the complexities of child abuse are important to write about, but I wasn’t in the state of mind to appreciate it at the time.

Anyways, when I finally pushed through to the finish of the book, the last third really surprised me and drew me back in. Glad the ending rounded out, surprised I made it there.
