This is a strange book; difficult to read. Much of it is internal dialogue, and half the time I couldn't tell whose internal dialogue it was. Compelling and tragic characters, but it didn't feel cohesive, and the ending felt rushed and cryptic. Loved parts of it, but overall I do not recommend. It was too much work for far too little payoff.

Hulme does an outstanding job of exploring the intricacies of domestic abuse. This novel is really an extended character study of three highly complex individuals, and Hulme’s prose style is lyrical and unusual. I’m glad I’ve read this, but it was a long and harrowing read.
