For a kid's book, this one was pretty good. I enjoyed it probably a little more than I should have... And it features pretty mature themes for the age group this is meant to be targeted at (death being a major one) but other than that I felt like it was a good read.

Read this aloud to my 8 yr-old who hates to read and he really loved this story. I loved how the author switched between the perspective of the boy and the bear. We were both especially excited to find out that the book was actually based on a true story! The Minnesota/Alaska connection was fun for us because we just went to AK this year! I just requested another book by the same author, Runt as our next read aloud.

3rd grade booktalk
Jonathan’s dad is a keeper at the Anchorage Zoo, which is both good and bad. Bad because it meant Jonathan had to move to Alaska with his dad, but wait until summer for his mom and little sister to move out and join them. It’s hard without his sister, Rhonda, even though they talk on the phone all the time. But Dad working at the Anchorage Zoo is good because Jonathan gets to spend a lot of time there – particularly with Mama Goose, a friendly large white goose who freely roams the zoo and often shares popcorn with Jonathan. Other than missing Rhonda and Mom, everything is great with Jonathan. But then one night, he hears a noise outside his house. Thinking it’s his dad, he goes downstairs to investigate – and comes face to face with an enormous brown bear. Jonathan makes pretty bad choice after another (why would you follow a giant brown bear around and try to lure it back to your house, just because you feel safe that he didn’t eat you the first time and you want to help him??) but is lucky – because A Bear Named Trouble, isn’t really an ordinary bear. This short novel is based on a true story, and the bear in question still lives at the Duluth zoo in Minnesota, where he was sent after the events of this book.
