This book is twice as long as it should be and has all the ridiculousness of a gothic thriller that you would expect — but I was still completely charmed by it. The audiobook was particularly well done.

Intrigue, suspense, even a secret society.

Truly a wonderful mystery with a vibrant cast of characters. Feels way ahead of its time in some respects; and better even than The Moonstone (his more famous mystery).

This book is fantastic! So much so that I think this might be one of my top three favorite books ever. It is the perfect mystery that has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I was very impressed with how the author wrote the book, it was narrative from all the characters and each character had their own tone to how they wrote their side of the story. I also loved Marian, she was such a strong woman.

I really tried liking it but most older works just ain't for me. I can see/hear that it's well written so I do recommend it for people loving these kinda books.
