The Woman in White

Wilkie Collins

3.96 AVERAGE

mrs catherick tho… she’s an icon, she’s a legend and she IS the moment!

A solid 3.5 stars. Two reasons, mainly- 1 I thought this was going to be a Victorian gothic story. I should have done my research better because it is not quite as suspenseful as I’d have liked for October. And number 2- Whyyyy did it have to be so long?? I can appreciate it for the method of writing it like evidence presented in court, which was an interesting way to tell a story. But it was such a slog to read- especially the last 100 pages when the mystery was solved, but it still was overly explained to death to preserve the legal evidence story telling method.

I loved the character foils of all the women in this story. It felt very strongly like a feminist commentary. Or maybe it’s just an honest depiction of how little power women had over their own lives at the time. Rich or poor, they were all still slaves of the men that took control over them. It sort of lost that angle with the reintroduction of Walter Hartright as the narrator once more at the end, but it worked for a lot of it.

Overall I liked it. And I’m proud of myself for finishing it.
mysterious

Mystery upon mystery, all solved satisfactorily and believably. A lot of words, but clear story lines and laugh out loud moments. A surprisingly satisfying read.

Two years ago, I read my first Wilkie Collins. It was The Moonstone, and I very much enjoyed it. I quickly ordered The Woman in White after that; I wanted to read more Collins, see if his other well-known novel was as great. I ended up not picking it up right away because I was spoilt the story by youtube.

Two years later, I though it was time to ignore as much as possible what was still in my head about this 700-page book and dive right into it. And boy, I was not disappointed. I won’t say too much about it, so as to not spoil anybody myself.

It’s the story of Walter Hartright, a painting teacher, and his two pupils, Marian and Laura. Walter goes to Cumberland, where he found a position to teach two young ladies. The night before he leaves London, he strangely encounters a lost woman, dressed in white, who just escaped from an asylum. While speaking with her, Walter realizes that she was acquainted with the previous mistress of the house he is going to, the late mother of Marian and Laura. From there, things escalate and a lot of drama ensues.

This story is engrossing right from the beginning. The intrigue has many, many layers; it keeps building up, and then takes time to unfold. This, in my opinion, makes it all the more delightful. The narrative is coming from different characters, which keeps it dynamic. While reading, I was more than once surprised by the turn of events. I would highly recommend it to anyone feeling like reading a thrilling eerie victorian novel.
mysterious slow-paced

wow. just wow. I've never read anything like this before. I'm not really a mystery person (I don't really know why) but this book. woah. my jaw has physically dropped at some parts bc of the plot twists it was quite insane. this was a magical book omg I love it so so much. I'm so glad I read this book. legit I love Wilkie collins' writing so much. when the woman in white first appeared I was genuinely like a little bit spooked LOL. it was intense and it ugh it was just such a good mystery. I thought near the end it would slow down too bc that's usually what happens at the end of books but no. girl this kept that intense pacing all the way till the end it was crazy. that was definitely a journey. I won't say much to give the mystery away
