I love this book and treated myself to the audio version which is excellent, a really great listen.

The hook of this story is Rex the dog/human bio form who can't make his own decisions and just wants to be told he's a good dog. But he breaks free from his contraints very early in the novel and something more complex evolves, both in him and in the story.

This book is such a treat, imaginatively rich, thought provoking, informative and challenging, with references to The Island of Dr Moreau and as well as various zoological text books (I feel I learned a lot about bees).

Another really good story by Tchaikovsky. I loved the premise, the character, the technology.

Been trying to figure out where to rate this one - will have to go 4+. What could easily have just been military sci-fi is instead a thoughtful look at the vagaries of consciousness. How does it emerge, what defines it, and what protects it?

Lots and lots and lots of food for thought, and an easy to love protagonist in the form of a fully strapped armored dog. And a bear. And a crocodile. And bees (Bees!).

Think Clifford the Big Red Piece of Military Hardware if he couldn't stop reading David Hume.

There is only one word for this book and that is ‘brilliant’. I can’t recommend it highly enough. You owe it to yourself to read it.
