I STRUGGLED through this book. The imagery and idea of the story is great. There’s that. But Greta is DUMB as rocks. Like, zero common sense. Could not figure out what was in front of her face unless it was spelled out for her and shouted at her out loud. I think I have a headache from rolling my eyes. The cover of the book? Five stars. The innards…many many problems.

Great premise but felt too crunched in there. I rarely believe a book should be longer but this one should be.

For me it's 3.75 stars, I liked the setting and the characters a lot, but I felt like it was very predictable, and a lot of things were happening in the ending, and it felt rushed. There were moments in the last few chapters when I didn't know what was happening.
So glad it had a somewhat happy ending, I was doubting it was going to be a sad one.
Also, I wish the author did something more visible to make it clear when Greta is seeing a vision of the past, and when it's the present. For me, it was a bit confusing at times.

Rounded up from 3.75

Dark historical fantasy mixing Hansel & Gretel with a dash of Snow White and Rose Red. The premise of what happens to H&G years after their gingerbread adventure. Lots of details and world-building, which took a bit for me to get into. Also, the ending dragged a bit. Overall, a highly atmospheric magical debut.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen to an early copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. After The Forest by Kell Woods will be released on October 3rd, 2023.

A dark retelling of Hansel and Gretel? Count. Me. In.

This is the perfect book if you enjoy fairytales, especially reimagined ones that tend to lead on the dark side of things. With an October release date, this is the perfect book for an evening read with some pumpkin spice and a warm blanket. The way that the book is written is beyond magical and I ate it up.

I look forward to more books by Kell Woods!
