I was talking to my sister about this one, and I realized the author purposefully tried to unravel common scenes that I was hoping she would do, so ultimately it left me disappointed. But maybe it was to poke fun at spy movies?
Spoiler When Amelie was first assigned to get close to Fynn, she believed he was a big fan of hers as he had bought all of her films. He actually bought them for a relative. And then he invited her to his place and she thinks it'd because he was fascinated by her, but it was really because of said relative. There was also a scene where Amelie was trying to climb up a bookshelf in Fynn's library. He startled her and she fell down, but he missed her entirely and was unable to catch her. While Amelie was supposed to be a spy and have great memory, the author yanked away all the potential she had by being hyper- realistic and thereby simmering down a lot of potential fun (if that makes sense).
Still, very interesting setting and characters, I just wish she had carried out the scenes really differently.

Interesting premise, and the idea of an actress turned spy is captivating. The story has a lot of potential, but fell flat for me. Felt more like reading an embellished outline without the full descriptors. Could be my mood or the writing style, but it just didn’t mesh for me. I skipped areas and read the ending (fairly predictable), and ultimately didn’t read the whole thing due to loss of interest.

5 stars, Spies everywhere

THE STARLET SPY (HEROINES OF WWII)
by Rachel Scott McDaniel

This is a delightful novel stuffed with historical facts about a young Hollywood starlet Amelie Blake, who is invited to become a spy, in her native Sweden. She is cautioned "Trust no one."

There are all kinds of historical facts in this book, it makes for quite interesting reading. Highly recommend it. Each book in this series is designed as a stand-alone.

I thankfully received a complimentary copy of #TheStarletSpy #HeroinesOfWWIISeries from #BarbourFiction I was under no obligation to post a review.

adventurous hopeful mysterious fast-paced

Rachel Scott McDaniel has quickly risen in the ranks of my favorite Christian authors, and this book was no exception to my love for her work. Adorable romance, intriguing mystery, and a fast-paced plot meant that I did not want to stop reading. (and I ended up finishing it in a day so I'd say that's a good sign) I'm sad it's over. I want to stay with these characters forever. (I know a sequel is unlikely but like... I'd read one...)

I was instantly invested in Amelie and her story, wanting her to succeed from the start. World War II from Sweden's point of view isn't something I've read about before, so that was super interesting! (I don't think I've read many books at all set in Sweden, actually. I should work on that.) The intrigue was high as we're introduced to the cast of supporting characters, and I didn't know who to trust!

Speaking of supporting characters... the romance. *happy sigh* I loved it. If you (like me) are a sucker for the love story in The Sound of Music, you should read this one. (there's not many plot similarities, but they gave me the same vibes) The grumpy x sunshine, the protective natures, the dance scene?? I'm a puddle on the floor for these two.

"The Starlet Spy" was everything I hoped it would be, and I'm so glad. Five stars from me!
