“What did the worker have to do before she arrived at work? Who cooked her dinner, made her bed, and soothed her distress so that she could return to the job one tiring day after another? Did someone else do all this people-making work, or was it she herself who performed it—not only for herself, but also for the other members of her family?
These questions disclose the truth that capitalism conspires to obscure: the waged work of profit-making could not exist without the (mostly) unwaged work of people-making. Thus, the capitalist institution of wage labor conceals something more than surplus value. It also conceals its birthmarks—the labour of social reproduction that is its condition of possibility. The social process and institutions necessary for both kinds of “production”—that of people and that of profits—while analytically, distinct are nevertheless mutually constitutive”
Read this in uni and remembered enjoying it, so when I was able to grab it from the library I jumped at the chance. Solid read. Great introduction to feminist and anti-capitalist lit if you’re looking for one!

if you're already familiar with the topic, then this book is more of a short summary and doesn't introduce any new ideas.
i would mark this manifesto as more of an introduction for people who want to learn about non-neoliberal feminism. at the same time, though, i feel like if you're not already familiar with the topics, a lot of the jargon and ideas could be difficult to grasp so i don't know how good of a primer this would be

Actually finished this the day I started it! I liked it a lot, but I wish it were a bit more practical in its solutions. But also I understand that solutions aren't necessarily the point of a manifesto. I just found myself nodding and agreeing a lot and then saying okay now what.

For a book marketed at the 99%, I found this book painfully inaccessible. At times I felt stupid reading it. There was so much that I didn't understand but desperately want to. I don't think this is a book meant to educate someone or invite them into the notion of Feminism for the 99% - it's really better for someone who's already an expert in the subject. I agree with so many of the ideas put forth in the book but I thought the presentation was not meant for me.
