I love this series. Each book picks up right where the last dropped off. Mercedes was in some tough places in the past few books and the author didn't let her recover easily. Like all the characters, Mercy seems so real and that she doesn't miraculously recover from the psychological scars of rape and kidnapping is a real testament to the author's desire to keep her real. It would be so easy to gloss over the trauma. For all the real emotion, the action doesn't suffer. I can't wait to read what happens to Mercy next.

Quote I enjoyed.
34% in: One of the oddest things about being grown up was looking back at something you thought you knew and finding out the truth of it was completely different from what you always believed.

(240424) Mercy makes reckless, impulsive decisions motivated by her isolationist tendencies of not wanting to "burden" others, and I'M OVER IT.
(I was gonna say she makes stupid decisions, but that wasn't quite accurate.)

TLDR: how did a whole bunch of NOTHING end up happening in a 300 page book. What did I just read. There's no strong overarching plot.

I tried to get into the Mercy Thompson series years ago, and I rmbr DNF-ing that first book. Abort attempt!
Why I DNF-d is the same reasons why I'm probly not gonna pick up another: the characters feel disjointed, the plot pacing is like a jerky rollercoaster with rusty hinges that get stuck, and the lore of how the magic actually works seems to contain many exceptions and vague descriptors. Twice Mercy goes "ah now I realize", and then she doesn't actually describe what she realized. Like, what's the magic reveal?? Buzzwords beating around the bush.

And the whole thing with Amber and Blackwood felt like a non-sequitor side adventure, like Rose and Finn's adventure in The Last Jedi.

If the main plot was Marsilia trying to come for Mercy, then arguably, the climax should be the
gathering of Adam's wolf pack and Marsilia's seethe with Mercy and Stefan, but what was the POINT of that meeting?? They're supposed to come to bargain for a truce, wolf VS seethe, but instead Adam has no control of this truth-chair interrogation, he's not coming as/being treated as an equal, and he ends up as an audience member. What kind of truce negotiation was that?! They just let Marsilia have free reign!

-POV: first person, singular (Mercy)
-FLIPPANT: what IS it with paranormal/urban fantasy couples that act flippantly nonchalant and casual about their partner almost dying? "Hey you're calling?" "We're on our way to you" "This guy's dead. I made it" "Yes, I figured since you're calling". Hello??? Like what's wrong with expressing your fear, love, and care for each other?!?! Like Kate and Curran (Kate Daniels series) occasionally cheekily do this nonchalant stuff, but they also do have moments when they're very expressive with their love, like he goes wild when she's impaled and taken from him.
-REGULAR NAMES: Also- what's with paranormal/UF characters having the most BORING ASS names?? Paul, Mary Jo, Adam, Jim, Amber, James, Mike- LIKE PLS! HELP ME HELP YOU RMBR THESE DAM CHARACTERS!

2021 reread: A pretty creepy entry in the series, with Mercy out of town in Spokane and on her own a lot to check out a malevolent ghost threatening a kid. There’s vampire mind control, and people spending a long time in cages. But the end was pretty satisfying.

From 2009: Are these getting more random, and more vampire-centric, or is it just me? Note to author: please pretend that I have forgotten a lot of what happened in the last book, because I probably have.
Happily, unlike Laurell K., the heroine seems to get more rational with each book rather than less. Also, no weird graphic sex scenes, just mystery & action.

This wasn't my favorite of the series. It was still good, but there was just something about it that I didn't like as well.
