This book probably isn't for everyone.  Not a lot actually "happens", there's a large ensemble of supporting characters that are hard to distinguish, the prose is straightforward, and the humor comes from a pretty specific comic sensibility.

The pop culture comparisons in the blurbs on the back cover (Wes Anderson / The Royal Tannenbaums ) are apt; if you listen closely, you can almost hear the Kinks needle drop fading in a soundtrack.  I'd add the "mumblecore" movie genre as another cultural influence, especially in the novel's first half that focuses on the titular characters fumbling their way through early adulthood and in search of connection.  The novel's latter half shows influence from (gasp) traditional romance as the lead characters make a sincere bid for connection.

While this lacked the propulsive momentum of my favorite novels, I was glad to have picked this up.  It's smart, contemporary, and effectively balances the absurd and the heartwarming.  If contemporary romance were more like this, I'd read the genre all the time.  The book is quietly, dry-ly, yet laugh-out-loud funny, which alone rounds my 3.5ish  star review up to 4 stars.
