Poetische Erzählsprache unter Verwendung märchenhafter und biblischer Wortbilder. Handlung findet nur am Rande statt. Alles in allem ein recht spezielles Buch, was sicher nicht für jeden mit Freude lesbar ist.

If you liked Barbery's other novels, don't read this. If you enjoy fairy tales, don't read this. Might be enjoyed by fans of Wuthering Heights or Tess of the d'Urbervilles, my very least favorite classic novels, as it is similarly overwritten and over the top with symbology.

This is a fantasy novel that feels like it has been written by someone who has never read a fantasy novel but all the same assumes that she and her readers all share the same general conception of what one should be. Everything is drawn in the broadest of strokes with very little effort into world-building, and there's magic and good and evil and some sort of battle but characterizations of either side are hazy at best. There are 2 little girls who I guess are elves, but it doesn't really matter. Honestly, I think the only people who would really like this are people who have been yearning to read real fantasy but maybe don't know it.

While I enjoyed the plot and the characters, I absolutely despised reading this book. It dragged on in so many places and I felt myself being lulled to sleep at times. I loved when dialogue actually happened. I looked forward to it.
There is too much frilly nonsense in here for me. To an extent it is great and there are bright, shining moments in this book where I greatly appreciate the language and depth of explanation, but not throughout the whole thing. It got to be too much and I got myself ready to put it down several times. I had higher hopes for this after reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog and I was disappointed. This would've been given a lower rating if not for those moments I spoke of that kept my interest, despite nearly falling asleep while reading it. If you like flowery, over-the-top poetic language, then this is for you. I however, felt it could've been paired down quite a bit and would've been a much more enjoyable read.

Not quite in the right mindset for this one, but nevertheless a lovely story, beautifully written and a joy to read. I'm disappointed I missed the author at adlww this year.

When I started reading this book, I was sure that I would love it even more than The Elegance of Hedgehog. It is a story about two girls that are linked with magical connection. The language felt unique and heartbreakingly beautiful. It did not last, though. The same thing that eating too much chocolate happened to me; I started getting bloated with too much sweetness. I did not really get in touch with the characters and the world. Yes, it was beautiful and at some parts it almost felt like you were reading a fairy tale but at the end it was all too much. I have heard that Barbery will be writing the second part for this book and I am not really eager to pick up the second one to be honest.

There is so much potential in this book, but it feels more like a draft, or even an outline, than a finished book. There is so much that needs expanding, I hope we will see it in the next instalment.
