Okay, this was fine, but it definitely didn’t live up to any major hype for me, but Madeline miller’s prose is fantastic, which is why this gets 3 stars instead of 2.
Did Circe make ANY purely platonic friends? Except for maybe Penelope towards the end? The men in her story she either fucks, is related to, or turns to swine. Boring. And no female friendship, anywhere, again except maybe at the very tail end. Even more boring.
I’ve never really been a huge Greek mythology girly so you could argue I shouldn’t have even read it

This one took me a while but I'm proud that I finished it. I did like the story, but I struggled to get into the cadence. My copy also had thin pages so it felt like I wasn't getting anywhere for a long time.

Beautifully written. The author has captured the voice of a goddess who is thousands of years old and yet still has so much to learn. Like in life, the realization of the pain of patriarchy comes slowly and then all at once (for both the character and the reader).
The narrator is a perfect fit for this book - she sounds timeless, and paired with the text of the book, you can hear the voice of a goddess describing events that are emotionally close, but have the distance of thousands of years.
