Reverie

I picked up this book because I follow the author's hilariously goofy and yet sincere Twitter feed and I thought, "If he's this funny and strange on Twitter, what must a book by him be like?" Ryan La Sala's debut novel is described by the publisher as a cross between the movie Inception and the book/TV show The Magicians, and while simplified, that's an excellent description to get people interested. It's an urban fantasy that takes place in the real world and is perfect for any queer teenagers (or adults) who know the feeling of needing to escape from the real world for a time into dreams of a better life; only, in this book, it turns out those dreams can be dangerous too.

3.5 stars I liked the premise but i wasnt in love with how the story unfolded.

Reverie is a gripping and whimsical tale about a gay boy who learns to stand up for himself. I loved (almost) every second of it. Pacing, writing and character development were all great although I thought that the characters were a bit to young/ flawed for me. The only real criticism I have of it is that it was kind of bland at times, otherwise I can only recommend reading it!

This queer-positive science fiction novel doesn't quite ring the bells for me.

I loved the concept of this novel, but, if I'm being entirely honest, I was a bit confused by how the reveries worked. Normally, I wouldn't really care all that much about it and would probably only barely affect the book's overall rating, but in this case the rating dropped from a 4 star to a 3 star mainly because of the fact that reveries are essentially the centerpiece of the plotline; I didn't really have a true understanding of it, and, hence, I wasn't fully able to understand the story itself.

Though, on the other hand, I found everything else about this book; the writing style, the characters, the cover page ; high quality and beautiful.

I really wanted to give this more stars, but I was just too continually confused by the plot, and I couldn't connect well with the main character. The beginning had SO much potential!! Maybe I finally have aged out of YA because this just seemed a little too juvenile for me :( Or, I just didn't like this book. Sorry!! Lived for the LGBT+ representation, though!

This never hooked me. I loved The Honeys, but this lacked the energy and atmosphere of that novel.
