This novel was in a lot of ways not what I expected it to be, but I think it's in being different that it's able to stand out. I thought the settings were all interesting and well-written, even if they did perhaps get a little muddled near the end, and I thought the character dynamics in particular were quite interesting, for reasons I won't go into because Plot. That being said, I spent a lot of the book not really liking Kane, but I'm hoping there might be a sequel to this novel, so we can see more of the characters in their element.

Also, this book is super queer, and obviously that's amazing. For whatever criticism I may have about the novel, the queerness makes me incredibly happy that such a book exists, and is available in the YA genre.

A cool story about gay teens fighting rouge dreams. Love the concept and the story. Writing was okay. Nothing amazing, but had a good time. The pacing was very fast. Since this book is a fantasy it could have benefited greatly from being a little longer to solidify the characters and the world/magic system. Instead it just felt like a drive by experience that I never really got to stew in.

Talk about a high stakes, high action story! This just made me want to spend so much time in my own mind crafting my own reverie.

I liked this! Good queer YA fantasy. The main character is a bit of a blockhead but, in all honesty, what YA lead ISN'T a bit of a blockhead?

Kane wakes up in the hospital and has no memories of how he got there. People keep telling him that he stole his parents car then crashed it into a building which proceeded to blow up. As he tries to return to normal life everything feels a little off so now he has to try to uncover the clues to see what actually happened with some strangers who claim that they were once really good friends.
I thought the concept sounded very original and interesting and I think this story could have been great, but for me everything just seemed so flat and the story dragged on and on. The whole story just seemed all over the place and disjointed. The characters also had no depth and I felt like I never got to know them. Maybe of the characters spent more time in the real world instead of the dream world. Then the romance that the main character in seemed undeveloped and forced. The cover was beautiful which is all I can say I enjoyed about the book.

I really enjoyed that. Fairly typical, what if our dreams were real kind of fantasy, but I loved the way the LGBTQ was just part of the plot, not it's whole focus. As if being gay is, you know, normal, and only part of who you are, not your whole identity.

“That’s the thing about a big imagination. It’s hard to belong anywhere when you can always imagine something better.”

Definitely worth the read. Either I don't read enough ya fantasy anymore, or this was really unique, but I had so much fun. ✨
My imagination could finally fly, fly to the sky and to other dimensions.

“Witches interest me,” Dr. Poesy said. “If you look at most female archetypes—the mother, the virgin, the whore—their power comes from their relation to men. But not the Witch. The Witch derives her power from nature. She calls forth her dreams with spells and incantations. With poetry. And I think that’s why we are frightened of them. What’s scarier to the world of men than a woman limited only by her imagination?”

Also, I desperately want a paperback, but it's out of stock everywhere.

What a fun book! Great adventure, heart-felt emotion and wonderful relationships.

Kane Montgomery wakes up in the hospital being told he ran away from home, stole his parents' car, ran it into a historical mill and blew it up. Luckily, he survived but he doesn't remember anything about the accident or the time leading up to it. Then weird things start to happen and a girl he knows but doesn't really know says they are friends and he remembers none of it. The adventure that follows brings back his memories, leads us into dreams and introduces us to a drag queen sorceress.

This type of plot line annoys me. Also, it was a bit messy overall. A lot of unrealized potential.
