I really wanted to love this book but I had several problems with it. The premise is unique with the dream worlds and the ability to manipulate them. With that being said, the storyline didn’t allow time for any character development for me to connect with any of them. I struggled to finish this book but wanted to see how it turned out. I’m still a bit confused about what exactly happened.
Absolutely delivers on the gay inception meets the magicians premise. Also something the blurb doesn’t really mention is that the dreams in this book are way more interesting and fun than the dreams in inception. The dreams here are all kind of satire of different (mostly YA) tropes and genres, my favorite was sort of a Jane Austen novel but with invading beetles made of gemstones. I did not find this hard to follow at all unlike some reviewers and if there were plot holes or mechanics inconsistencies, I didn’t notice them.
Feel good romp with a happy ending and a welcome addition to LGBTQ YA.

cute YA magical fantasy. really interesting world building concept
Not really a fan of this one. I can't quite describe exactly why I didn't really like it - maybe it's the audiobook format. The narrator's tone didn't always seem to match the dialogue
I got this ARC from Edelweiss but decided to wait for the audiobook to be published because it's narrated by one of my favorites: Michael Crouch. And it is a very good narration.
However, this was a rollercoaster of a read. Meaning that at some points during the read I loved it, and at others I just didn't care for it.
My absolute favorite part is the story of two side characters, a couple of old ladies. Five stars to those parts. But our MC Kane was just being such an a** to his sister and his friends at times. He annoyed me! So, four stars? And then, without spoiling too much, something happened toward the end that just knocks another star off my review. So, three stars then.
Inception meets The Magicians? Absolutely. The writing is very good, but the magic system is poorly explained. I will probably forget the plotline soon (it is complicated though), but I'd still recommend the book. I'm seeing very mixed reviews, and I am very happy that some people love it. I will be on the lookout for new books by Ryan La Sala!

I picked up this book because it was my library's "Big Library Read" and 1. the premise sounded really cool and 2. a review called it "joyously, riotously queer" and I was immediately intrigued LOL.
I was really hooked on the story! It's not my favorite book ever, but it was super imaginative and I really appreciate that. I wasn't a huge fan of Kane's hostility towards everyone for most of the book, that was annoying and it took me out of the story a bit to be mad at Kane's reactions. Also not sure how I feel about the lack of resolution over what Kane's life was pre-amnesia? I wanted some more backstory with that, to get a fuller picture of his relationship with Dean and his friends. The ending was still very cute though!
This is one of those books where you *really* have to just "go with it" - as in, since magic is involved, there are no rules! For example, even though there is the threat of death in the reveries, it seems none of our cast can actually die! They have essentially unlimited power, but sometimes they get tired :/
But overall all the reveries were beautifully written and this was very fun to listen to!
