This may be a bit controversial, however, I don’t think this entire storyline makes much sense. Going entirely off the text of the LN (therefore, not including the manga or the anime) the ending makes no sense.
Loulan and Suirei kidnap Maomao but never explain the reasoning behind it, only that they didn’t wish to bring her to the Fortress. However, later Loulan admits that she brought Maomao there to help with the reviving of the children. But, she may also have been lying this whole time, so… 🤷
The whole rebellion makes no sense. It was Shenmei’s idea, clearly, however Shishou decided use his wife’s rebellion to remove all the corruption in the country. But, they hadn’t planned for the rebellion to even happen as it did (aka Jinshi storming the fortress with the secret army), the actual plan was to have Loulan bare the Emperor’s child and then murder all other Princes… How did he plan to remove all corruption in that case?
Shishou is a pitiful character that, despite being the Prime Minister of the country and a favoured of the Empress Regent, lacks any sort of motivation or drive.

All in all I consider this novel to fall in the pitfall of having been written and published chapter by chapter, without the internal cohesion that one would expect from a single novel.

This one was the best one so far ahhhh!!! I mean holy shit?

I don't like to have any spoilers in my reviews but I mean the tension and stakes were SO high in the second half of the book? And we got some family tree/connection reveals, new characters, said goodbye to other characters - just a wild ride all the way through.

Listen, I hear all this talk about the author not liking the romance aspect OR Jinshi - but I have pages upon pages of highlights that would say mother fucking otherwise!!

I was desperate for content and read the end of this book, right at the moment I was in the scans. Well. I am now in advance, but at the expense of a good read.

It's just not well written.

I like the main character (Maomao). I really do. But not in this book.
The lore was introduced in a way that was not natural.
The relationship between the two characters is frankly annoying and I'm not even sure this is consensual.

This is a good example of what a different medium can contribute to a story. The drawing enhances the story and the interpretation of the characters' behavior seems much more nuanced with the facial expressions.

Maybe I missed the point of the book. Maybe. But I don't think so.
More charitably, I think I am not the public.
