I was really excited to read this as I’m a big fan of the Lady of Shalott ballad, but it fell flat in multiple ways. The author makes a perplexing choice to skim the most interesting parts of Arthurian legend — the island of Avalon, the sword in the stone, etc— and focus on lukewarm politics and flat character interactions. It was a struggle to finish.
The pacing was the most glaring issue: we were forced to watch characters simply…hang out and wait for large chunks of time. There was a lot of wasted space where character development could have happened.
This book also has some unfortunate (accidental, I hope) anti-semitic imagery when describing the villains of this book.
