taking off a star for the insane amount of anachronisms in this book oh my god 😭
but hey !!! I am currently crying while writing this !! honestly I didn't expect to be so emotional finishing this I wasn't like overly connected to any of the characters but WOW?? I really enjoyed this! I've always loved Arthurian stories but haven't read one in a long time, and this was a good one to get back into that world with. I think the time jumps were pretty seamless between the past, present, and Elaine's visions, although it took me a while to be okay with the writing style during the visions lmao
bottom line: an engaging and interesting adventure story about friendship and hard choices and finding out who you are underneath all the influences of the people and things around you. yay for Laura Sebastian she slayed this one lol

not 100% confident about the 3 stars. this book was so slow and took me forever to finish. maybe something i should have waited to read after getting further into my fantasy reading journey.

It's life, Elaine. Getting hurt, picking yourself up, trying again. You're so focused on the ending sometimes that I don't think you know how to appreciate the during.

my first meeting with any retelling of the Arthurian myths was a good one. to be fair i'm not too familiar with anything that involves the legend of King Arthur so as i was reading this book i was also watching lots of youtube videos about him.

i didn't have any high expectations about this book as it is a fantasy book and i'm not a huge fan but frankly, there is more that "historical fiction" than fantasy. the story is quite good, it was easy for me to get into it more as i read it more. i wasn't really expecting the end of the book but it wasn't disappointing.

from what i've learned the author has written the story a bit differently from what it originally is but i think that's what made it feel "better". it definitely made me wanna get into the Arthurian myths now.

This book was a nicely paced read and beautifully written. It was a little repetitive at times but there’s a reason for it. It is important to note that retellings aren’t bound by rules, and other reviewers are silly for being so critical in regards to the traditional stories. I definitely recommend it, and can even see myself rereading it in the future.

My biggest dislikes were the writing style (how the words formed sentences) and the ending. There’s nothing wrong with the authors writing style it’s just not one that I tend to enjoy as much. The ending felt too fast and not quite right for reasons I can’t articulate.
Otherwise I loved this! I loved reading the myth from Elaine’s POV and I loved getting a different version than I’ve seen before, particularly of Gwen. I absolutely loved the women-centric telling of the myth and the evocativeness of the scenes Sebastian painted.

I love Laura Sebastian, but I didn't really love this book. Didn't suck me in, and while it's an interesting retelling of King Arthur, in my opinion, it leaves a lot to be desired.
