I’ve only ever read one baby book and this is it. I needed a quick refresher since it’s been a minute since the last baby. Some of the stuff in here is a bit over the top or outdated, but it does a really good job of providing the bare basics that new parents are concerned about. I picked it up years ago because I didn’t need a parenting philosophy, just an idea of what gear to buy. That’s what that book is great for.

Nothing mind-blowing, but a nice simple guide on basic baby care. Focused on the US so details vary a bit depending on where you live.

Amusing enough, and if you pick through there is actually good information here. Won't lie, got this one for my husband. Made him laugh, good icebreaker on the subject. Really more of an open door than anything else?

A little too cute with its basic conceit to actually be something you can follow easily. It feels like a stocking stuffer from Barnes & Noble more than a real book, even though it is a real book, with quite a wide variety of topics covered. I dunno, I just think the key aesthetic choice of the book didn't work much for me.

Short and funny, and written with the male mind in mind. Although not overly detailed, it was still comforting, as it breaks down the steps for taking care of a child into easy-to-follow instructions. It is definitely not a "baby bible", but a good starting point.

This is a book that exists to be given as a gag gift at a baby shower. Embarrassing if this is actually how you need to interface with baby advice. The gimmick of speaking like a car manual falls apart quickly when you remember that baby advice is usually surrounding somewhat serious topics. Either it comes across as insanely inhuman ("If your model does not articulate sounds after the first 12 months, contact your abby's service provider") or they err on the side of good taste and just give straightforward advice, abandoning the premise entirely (though I'd have died to see a version of this book that kept up the impersonal tone through the heimlich and CPR sections).

I'll probably read this at least twice more before the baby gets here--this was sooo helpful and funny. It's written in the style of a manual for a laptop or other electronic device, and it has these adorable (but useful!) diagram-style drawings in here. It make having a baby seem much less scary and more like, "OK, I've programmed a VCR--I can totally handle this!" Highly recommended for the new-parents out there.
