""This time" Ragle said "is out of joint""
.
Spoilers/ Review for Time out of Joint
.
Set in an alternate 1959, and opening in a supermarket we are introduced to Victor Nielson and his wife Margo, as well as Ragle Gumm. Every day Gumm does these challenges where by he must find a Little Green Man hidden in a picture (like where's Wally?) But there are those who take a dim view of Gumm's "hobby" and the money he makes from it. But Gumm is never wrong; even when he is wrong! One day something odd happens to Ragle. Whilst queueing for a soft drink, the soft drink stand disapears in front of Ragle's eyes and in its place, Ragle finds a piece of paper reading "soft drink stand". It's not the first time this has happened, or just Ragle it's happening to. His nephew, Sammy has also experienced it. Just what's going on in the world?! Is Ragle having another breakdown or is there something more sinister happening?
.
As part of the #journeyintoscifi2020 I did this at last. I won it indirectly via a Giveaway (thank you to @direintention . We've done all 3 now!) And it sounded like an interesting PKD!
.
This one will suck you in quite easily! The concept of it is nice and simple and works. The early twists about Ragle kept me hooked! What got me interested was that Ragle and co. had no clue who Marilyn Monroe was. Which is odd since she was Mrs America effectively! The slow reveals of what's going on is well done and Victor and Ragle questioning their world around them works! It's more mystery than sci fi but holds elements of both. The ending and explanations do make sense in the end! A nice Dick story and one that if you're looking for some sci fi I'd recommend!
.
Overall 4.5/5⭐

An engrossing read. Although it would have been irrelevant to the plot, I almost wish Dick had delved more into the puzzle. Who writes the clues? Do they have any relevancy to the "solutions"?

Classic Dick. Good characterization as the protagonist gradually discovers that his everyday world has something very wrong with it, and reality starts to fall apart into paranoia and conspiracy. Try to avoid reading anything about the story, including the intro on GoodReads. Stands up well in spite of being from the 1950s.
CW: sexual assault, Philip K. Dick writing
"You're a very attractive-looking woman, June." "Thank you," she said, smiling up at him. (..) "I was trying to make love to you." Rolling back, she stared at him. "Do you want me to?", he said. Attractive, he thought, albeit immature. Not dumb so much as sheer retarded. (..) "No", she said (..). [H]e took hold of her by the throat and kissed her on the mouth. Her mouth was dry, small, and it moved to escape him; he had to grab her neck with his hands. "Help," she said faintly. "I love you," he told her. She stared at him wildly (..) as if she thought – god knew what she thought. Probably nothing.
