I liked this but it wasn't what I expected. I liked it because it definitely felt realistic in terms of what could happen. It's not outside of the realm of possibility that we transition to a world that looks like this.

It's different than I expected because I thought that this was going to be more of a dystopian and that the three of them would band together to take down this rich bitch CEO. The world building regarding The Inside was interesting imo, but the space ships weren't really elaborated on.

It wasn't a bad book but there's no plot? It's a lot of just narration and accounts of what's happening, which again not bad, but not that great either. It was easy to follow along to but I kept waiting for an overarching plot. I think it'd be a great limited series or movie I feel like it's everything Barbie movie was supposed to be regarding toxic femininity and reversal of sexism. It really shows human nature to perpetuate cycles and uphold systems of power and oppression. I think it'd be a great book for a book club or book discussion there's a lot to unpack here which I appreciated.

Ok. I really enjoyed this book, BUT I think it will disappoint a lot of readers.

It’s simple and on-the-nose (buzzwords included), has flat characters with a tidy plot, and you have to suspend some disbelief. If you’re looking for a nuanced, in-depth critique on climate, gender, capitalism, and white feminism — you’ll be disappointed.

BUT sometimes you need just want to turn off your brain and jump in and this did that for me. There are some really interesting and fucked up elements in this dystopian world that kept me engaged and
the cartoonishly evil billionaire
was a good laugh.

I’d encourage readers to go in blind, but the villain reads like a
bossbabe trying to build a paradise created by J.K. Rowling and a beige mom
.

NOTE: while there’s lots of queer rep, one of the blurbs on the book says it’s found family but I don’t think this will scratch your found family itch.

I was skeptical early on reading this, but I ended up really liking it. It's a good takedown of gender essentialism set on the backdrop of early apocalypse-level climate change. There's heavy use of dramatic irony that works really well to keep you invested in reading it. All of the POV characters are well-written, including the perfectly hateable villain. The ending is hopeful but a little unsatisfying, which sort of feels perfect for the story.

This need to be on every #GirlBoss book shelf...

A lite scifi criticism of white femme power spaces, the danger of trans exclusion and generalization of gender, and how the future must be inclusive for humanity's survival. Dashes of romance, mystery, thriller, and corporate intrigue. The story switches perspectives between a handful of characters, each experiencing different facets of The Inside, over the time span between 2050-2078. There are some steamy sapphic moments, but mostly the romance element is slow burn.

It was refreshing to see a white author tackle these subjects with care, earnestness, and precision. This type of call-out should not always fall onto non-white, non-cis/het folks!

It was fine! I enjoyed this author's memoir back when that came out and it's kind of cool she's able to write like this, too!

In a way, this felt more realistic than other dystopian novels.
I say this because the rich have all the power in the novel, and we're already seeing that now--private fire fighters, bunkers, etc. Was Jacqueline's idea for a gender essentialist "utopia" ridiculous and dangerous? Of course it was. Were the ones trying to help make it better "from the inside" doomed from the start? Yes, they were. Does this track with where things are and where things are going? Sure does!

I wouldn't re-read this but I would be up for an ad hoc book club hangout to talk through the book itself.
