I wanted so badly to like this more than I did--it's quite short, but took me forever to get through. I don't think it's an issue of translation: I've read other translations from Rodel, including other work by Tenev, and it doesn't suffer from the issues this book does. I think the crux is that it feels very bloated and meandering for what it's doing--the sort of thing a great editor can fix for the original text, but I know Bulgarian writers tend to be (understandably, given the history of communist censor) wary of editorial prescription.

This piece is probably a great longer short story with some pairing back to its core. But I don't think it's a terribly successful novel in this outing.
