The Keep

Dracula and Nazi's. Fun.

Claustrophobic vampire book set in a small castle full of Nazi's during WWII.

I really enjoy when an author brings something new to the vampire horror sub-genre. The vampire character Molasar, reminds me of cross between two literary characters, Rose The Hat (Doctor Sleep by Stephen King) and Ahrimam (Orion by Ben Bova).
The Keep is full of other interesting characters. Due to F. Paul Wilson's fast paced writing, each character bursts from the pages, and we get to know the motivations for each characters actions throughout the book.
We also get an imaginative history of Molasar's origins.

Michael Mann made a film adaptation in 1983. I first saw it back in the 90's, it's fantastic.

In a way, this book disappointed me, yet I read it all the way through. At first, this seemed to be a new and interesting take on the supernatural boogeyman-in-the-closet genre. Creepy atmosphere? Check. Despicable bad guys inexplicably dying? Check. Mysterious monster in the dark? Check. But then, the book took a sharp left turn into romance novel territory, which I found confusing. The denouement was completely predictable. That said, I anticipate reading another of F. Paul Wilson's novels before adding him to (or crossing him off) my list of authors to follow.

honestly? disappointing. the father, daughter, and red headed guy just killed any potential. i don’t want to read the rest of the series anymore

This is easily among the best vampire stories I have ever read. It stands tall among books like Summer of Night (my favorite) and Salem’s Lot (now my third favorite). The Keep is also among the creepiest “haunted house” books I have ever read. There is much to be feared here - both with the living and the dead. It is easily deserving of 5 stars.

Having just finished Simmons’ Children of Night, I felt that this book was able to accomplish much of what Simmons was not (for me) in regard to setting, history, and vampire mythos. The female lead in The Keep is quite strong, where I was exhausted with the lead in CON. The characters are very well developed (likable or not). The love story is even palatable - and that’s coming from someone who groans every time an author attempts to sprinkle in a little romance. I know The Keep it is part of a series, but it works very well as a stand-alone novel as well.

Having glanced at the remaining titles in this series, I was not sure what a few of them had to do with the overall storyline. The Keep was strong enough for me to decide to read them anyway, but I will be reading Reborn as book two instead of book 4, as was recommended on other review sites. Had I not enjoyed this book as much as I did, and were the remaining characters not set to reappear at the end of the series, I would be unlikely to continue (I’m not big on series).

I highly recommend this novel.

I initially was excited by this book. Action filled, vampire, slaughter. Then it turned maudlin. At about halfway through a love interests erupts and concludes with the typical fairy tale ending. I like a Stephen King ending. Nothing ever works out for the best!

DID NOT FINISH

Lemmed.

3.5 stars? I really liked the first half - what's not to like about vampires (ish) killing arrogant nazis... The middle dragged on a lot and then the end did a totally weird twist that was pretty good, but also really strange in relation to the rest of the story. Part epic fantasy, horror, and a strangely rushed romance, this book had a whole lot of ideas.

This was a lot of fun -- nazis, vampires, even some zombies (of a sort)! Much more entertaining than I expected when I first picked it up. Apparently it's the first in a series, I'm going to have to keep an eye out for more by this author.
