This is Shakespeare's best play. If you can see it in person, please do! However there are some amazing readings on Youtube as well. The story deals with so much guilt and pain.

Güçlü ve onurlu bir komutan olan Macbeth bir gün üç cadıyla karşılaşıyor ve cadılar ona kral olacağının müjdesini veriyor. Öncesinde de sözlerini kanıtlarcasına var olan kralın onu yeni bir unvanla ödüllendireceğini söylüyorlar. Bu gerçekleşince Macbeth ve karısı kendilerini hırsa kaybediyor. Kralı öldürüp tahtı ele geçiriyorlar. Ama vicdanları onları rahat bırakmıyor.

Shakespeare'in bu kurgusal karakteri 11. yüzyıl İskoçya Kralı Mac Bethad'ın (İngilizce olarak Macbeth) yaşamından beslenmiş. Mac Bethad da o gün hükmeden ve kuzeni olan Kral 1. Duncan'ı öldürmüştür. Kurgunun aksine bu olay savaş meydanında gerçekleşmiştir ve Mac Bethad Duncan'ın oğlu Malcolm tarafından öldürülene kadar 17 yıl boyunca başarıyla ülkeyi yönetmiş.

Elbette oyundaki karakterler gerçekten esinlenilse de olaylar aynı değil. Shakespeare'in Macbeth'i çift kişilikli bir adam. Kişinin itibarlı ve sadık bir bey olarak bilinirken kral olma ihtimali üzerine arzularına yenik düşüp kötü bir karaktere bürünebileceğini gösteriyor.

Macbeth doğasının dışına çıktığı için delirdi. İçten içe saygıdeğer ve adil bir lider olan Kral Duncan'ı öldürmek istemiyordu. Karısının yönlendirmesiyle Kral Duncan'a ihanet etmesi sonunda hem karısı hem de kendisi suçlulukla tutuştular. Bu da akli dengelerini kaybettirdi. Oyunda zihinsel rahatsızlıklara yer verilmesi özellikle o dönem düşünüldüğünde bugünün okurları için dikkat çekici bir nokta.

Ama o günün seyircileri için oyun farklı bir anlam taşıyordu. İskoçya Kralı James VI, James I olarak İngiltere tahtına da çıkıyor. Halkı gibi cadılığa ve kara büyüye sıkı sıkıya inanan Kral James güçlü cadılardan oluşan bir cadı meclisinin canına kast etmeye hazırlandığı fikrinde. Hatta Demonology adını verdiği bir çalışmasını bile bastırıyor. Shakespeare'in cadıların müphem kelimelerine kapılıp kendi sonunu hazırlayan bir karakter yazmasının yeni kralını memnun edecek bir hamle olduğu aşikar.

Trajikomik olan ise günümüzde bir tiyatro salonu içinde eğer Shakespeare'in oyununu sahnelemiyorsan veya provalardan birinde değilsen 'Macbeth' kelimesini dile getirmek katı bir yasak. Kötü şans veya başa bela getireceğine inanılıyor.

Read this play if you have not already done so!

Have you ever strived for something so hard that you end up damaging the relationships and people around you? Macbeth’s lesson regarding ambition is the perfect example of why, sometimes, we should just be happy with what we have and that it is not necessarily a good thing to listen to what three creepy, crazy chicks hiding in a cave have to say. This is, personally, one of my favorite Shakespeare stories. The imagery from this play is something that has stayed with me for a long time from the prophecy of the three witches to the blood on Lady Macbeth’s hands not to mention the fruitless crown and barren scepter ( which given the time could very well have been considered pornographic for all I know).

The lesson from this story has, perhaps, stood the test of time and could be one of the reasons I find it so appealing. This is one of the few Shakespeare plays I have been compelled to re-read time and time again.

Okay, so I didn't read much of this but we did read a lot of quotes, sadly I can't figure out how to shelve it without marking it as read but I did read a good portion of it. And it was good, I guess? I mean kind of a brutal story but some very interesting themes and ideas to discuss. Are the witches liars? What is fate? Was Mr. Will a RAGING feminist compared to those around him in that time period? The world may never know. I mean, it's interesting to look at these quotes in Shakespeare and realize how much we see them in pop culture and even use them in our own lives! Talk about impactful! But yeah, it was a fascinating story, all throughout discussing it in class I had the Take a Break section from Hamilton in my head. If ya know, ya know. Would recommend if you're... um, in need of food for thought, or you wanna witness a lot of murder I guess? Moral of the story? Don't have a sleepover at your friend's house. Consequences will be catastrophic.
