Am I addicted? Yes, yes I am, having flown through these 7 books in less than a month and, dear God, I am in love. It's been rare I find a series so addicting, so loveable, so well done. These books have had me giggling, gasping, and crying, something that I have only ever had the experience of Harry Potter doing, and that was many many years ago. Perhaps this book is not for everyone, but if one is anyone like myself, I encourage a read very, very much.

Meh.

This one was disappointing for me, and it was the first book of the series I didn't love. I'm not quite sure why. It's possible that reading it late at night, a few pages at a time, was part of the problem. The book's discrete sections -- the voyage to India, the journey by foot as a traveling circus, Mary's stay in the maharaja's home, another spell with Holmes.... somehow it all felt disconnected. I guess the Rudyard Kipling connection was cool, but other then (twist!) a character turning out to be his son, the narrative does very little with Kim. We're told that India is a big deal for Holmes, but not in a way that really deepens his character. And while some of what seemed to be loose ends are picked up in the next novel, others were not. (The cast a the maharaja's house was interesting, but never amounted to anything in the story.)

Anyway - this was the first one of the series I didn't love, but maybe someday I'll try it when it's not so late at night to see if I have a different experience.

Much better pacing than some of the previous novels.

I'm really enjoying these Laurie R. King novels. This one, in a fictional Indian setting, didn't disappoint.

I listened to this book on CD and I liked it a lot. I will say that at first I wasn't crazy about the reader, I really hated her voice for Holmes. I like to forget he is 70-something when I'm reading these. I like to think of him in his 50s and hot. :) The voice that the reader did for him made him sound like Geoffrey the Butler on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire. Anyway, I liked the rest of the story, and I think it's one of the better Holmes/Russell adventures. I liked little Bindra and the whole Kim storyline, obviously Holmes and Russell have a pretty easy time of things but I think the story is entertaining anyway. I loved the pig sticking scene, so exciting. I'll continue following along with Mary's adventures.

Mary and Holmes make a fantastic detective team in this novel that takes you from England to India. The characters and suspects keep you guessing throughout, and you can't help but admire Mary's intellect and spunk.
