2020 review:
The beginning of this is set at Wimbledon, and I do love a good sports setting. Unfortunately that setting did not last, and this book took some turns.
The audiobooks for this series are really really entertaining. The narrator makes Alex sound so posh and above it all, and I don't know if I think that's entirely true to his character (or true to how I see his character anyway), but it just makes it a lot of fun to listen to. I'm sitting here giggling and being like "yes Alex dahling, please do complain some more", because he's just spitting out these lines and he sounds so dramatic! "A front seat at Wimbledon? A Wimbledon graveyard perhaps!". That's just him complaining at not getting a good seat at Wimbledon. It's a very valid and fun interpretation of the character, it's not quite how I hear him when I just read them on my own, but it's fun.
This one, just like Stormbreaker has some questionable racist moments too, there are definitely some uncomfortable jokes in there that I don't feel like repeating, but just be aware of that.
The book is also weirdly sad sometimes, it doesn't have the same upbeat tone as the first two, but I guess that's what happens when you just want to be a regular orphaned schoolboy but the government keeps expecting you to be a spy.

I remember this being one of my favourite installments as a child and I think that's because the villain in this book is just so great and really set me up to be a huge fan of well-written antagonists!
