I’m really starting to adore the Alex Rider series. I have a huge soft spot for books of my childhood but being a typical child uninterested in the books I had on my shelf, I never got this far into the when I was younger. I’m so glad I’ve picked up this series as an adult and I’ve really been enjoying a bit of teenage spy action drama.
I’ve loved all of the books of Alex Rider so far and have to say they keep getting better and better! A bit of a guilty pleasure for me reading these and I’m glad I have a fair few others to be getting on with. Can’t wait to see what other adventures Alex gets up to !

It's a reread but I'm counting it in my book goal this year as with the rest of the Alex Rider rereads because it's been well over a decade. Anyways. The 3rd book is what got me hooked into the series when I was a kid and I can say that I stand by that original assessment. The settings and villians are far superior in this book than the previous two. I will apply death of the author with horowitz on these beginning books because I think the start of the series suffers from it's place in time post 9/11. Horowitz had the villian, Sarov, be a big Russian Commie baddie and I think that glosses over the nuance that can be applied to this complex villian. Horowitz unknowingly created this complexity and maybe knowingly created a foil to Alex, the protagonist. The villian reeks of nationalism and the flaws inherent in that idealism and Horowitz just seems to hand wave it. Then again this is a kids book but I'm a FIRM believer that YA can have big themes and present them cohesively and well. This is the first book I've reread in the series that I would consider suggesting to an adult.

Crocodile infested waters and nuclear bombs, and a Gameboy, like the one I had, which could pick up nuclear radiation.

This is the third book in the series. The villain had a lot more depth than the previous two, but I think the plot lacked a bit. Horowitz introduced a possible love interest for Alex - I have mixed reviews about it. One, I think that moves the book into young adult and I think this series had great potential for my reluctant reading 5th graders. A couple descriptions/interactions with Sabina would keep me from recommending it to my students.
Crazy action, but this time there seemed to be too much stuff thrown out and not really dealt with.
Not sure if I will continue with the series, but will probably at least take a break.

Alex Rider is a really stereotypical gary-sue (character without flaws) which I find makes him hard to relate to and boring to read about. I hope he gains more depth as the series goes on.
Alex Rider, teen spy travels to Cuba, and Moscow in his efforts to stop an evil Russian mastermind from creating a nuclear explosion and changing the balance of power in the world. Alex fights sharks and soldiers, guards and an evil henchman using his wits and cool spy gadgets.
