Loved the intensity and violence. The art work really played well with the story and characters. A twist happened that I didn't see coming, so kudos to the writers for that. My biggest qualm was the ending, as it was bizarre and so abrupt after everything that had just happened. It felt a bit like a car coming to a screeching stop, and then nothing. Overall though, a fun read.

My Thoughts On: Black Widow #1

1. I love Black Widow. I own every solo run of Black Widow that I could find. I am always excited to see a new Black Widow run, but I'm worried that this run leans too heavily on the events of the Secret Empire run (aka a dark period for us all).

2. So Natasha's dead now? Or supposed to be? When did the Red Room bring her back to life? Was that in Secret Empire? Do I need to read that arc to understand this?

3. Though Steve Rogers may be one of my least favorite Marvel characters (and you're not going to change my mind so don't fight with me), I love a Nat/Steve pair up. They just make sense together as a team, you know? His staunch moral code paired with her spy mindset? The best. Plus, you get priceless interactions like this: "No killing." "They can't see my face, Steve. I'm still believed to be dead." "I think they can not see your face while still living. You're a spy."

4. The fact that it's way too easy for the crowd to believe a fascist dressed as Captain America is perhaps more meta than it needs to be, but I liked that detail nonetheless. I want to give this exchange an award: "You listened to this phony spout all that hateful 'might makes right' garbage, and you actually thought that was something Captain America might stand for?" "Honestly? It's getting kinda hard to tell."

5. I like that Nat knows Steve well enough to be able to tell an imposter Steve from real Steve. Like, only a close friend can tell your imposter is not you because his nose isn't crooked from a childhood fight.

6. I'm weirdly interested in the imposter Captain America, and now I'm getting the weird urge to go back and read all those issues with the evil version of Steve. Someone, please stop me from doing this.

7. God, Nat and Steve's moral conflict is so good! I will always enjoy the struggle between their ideologies, and it is particularly good here.

8. Oh, the return of Nat's narration. I missed this. "...I can feel it rising inside of me. The violence. The rage. I've held it down, but that won't last much longer. I can't stay here. I need to release the killer instinct before someone gets hurt. Someone who doesn't deserve it."

9. I am into the Natasha Romanoff in an all white pantsuit with a black eyepatch aesthetic. I am also into the she kicks *ss while in that suit aesthetic.

10. Okay, is the Logan they're talking about Wolverine? Or is this a different Logan? Because it's Wolverine, I am more interested.

11. NATASHA IS ON A REVENGE MISSION! I am INTO IT. KILL SOME PEODPHILES, SEX TRAFFICKERS, AND CHILD RAPISTS. I might be too excited about that, but I don't care. Let Natasha be unapologetically dark.

12. Ugh, cool looking pimp guy. Do I have to care? Is this guy the head of No Restraints Play? Nat, kick his butt!

The storyline is one of my favorite that I’ve read in a Marvel series, and makes me want to see more of Natasha, specifically if she’s fighting these particular types of crime.

The Soskas mentioned in a letter from #1 (which is printed in the back of the book) that they felt that Black Widow was always held back by being in the Avengers, and I couldn’t agree more. This is full-on Natasha, completely unfettered by anyone or anything outside of her own moral code, and it is glorious!
