I enjoyed how Rosalind Franklin’s dedication to science was portrayed in the book. There’s also a decent ongoing thread on how women in science have been/continue to be treated. It was informative to follow Dr. Franklin’s life/research timeline. However, her character and plot otherwise felt simple. I felt that the focus on her romances was unnecessary and rather reinforced classically sexist tropes.

Marie Benedict has a way of bringing these oft-overlooked historical women to life. Her atmospheric writing and conveyance of emotions and passions make for an immersive read. This book in particular had a lot of science in it and I thank my previous job where I edited technical books on materials science for my limited understanding of x-ray diffraction and crystallography. Rosalind Franklin's story is beautiful and inspiring, but also tragic. If you enjoy delving deep into history, and in this case science, then this read is a lesiurely paced one to endeavor.

Another interesting book by Marie Benedict! I love that she chooses lesser known women in history for these books. Rosalind Franklin’s name does ring a bell for me, though I’m not sure from where. I didn’t know anything about her life. A lot of interesting science involved, too. The pacing was a bit wonky in places, but I enjoyed each phase of her life that was told.
