What a cliff hanger! I’m kicking myself for reading this now. I tried to wait until the 2nd book came out, but I just couldn’t resist. I need the next book ASAP!
This was definitely an engaging read and I’m interested to see where the second book goes to. But, the majority of the book was predictable and Ryan was really toxic, as well as problematic. I do also find it weird when authors make a character (mostly women) almost 18 and then once they’re an adult, give them really explicit sex scenes; it’s icky.

I can’t keep this spoiler free without saying how I feel about certain things so I added a tag. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book since I first saw the cover and I got so excited when I got an ARC!
An interesting start to a new series. Madison who lives in a trailer park finds out she has a rich twin sister called Madelaine. She contacts her and they end up switching lives. At first things go well (oddly enough nobody notices they switched) but then Lainey ends up dead and Maddie agrees to keep on pretending to be Lainey by their father’s request, who she came clean to after she found out her sister is dead.
Top notch plan guys, really.
I wouldn’t exactly call this a sports romance (as it is advertised) because a lot of the actual sport is going on behind the scenes. It gets mentioned, we’re present around and at the end of games but that’s about it.
It baffled me how lightly everybody went over Lainey’s death. It’s like they all felt like they just got a replacement, the 2.0 version with new and better features. Lainey was a huge bitch who messed with a lot of people so I get that it’s easier, but even her father barely showed emotion. She’s still a human being. Or maybe there’s more to that coming later because Lainey probably isn’t dead at all.
The love interest Ryan may not be the most trusting guy out there and for good reason, but it’s proven again and again it takes very little for him to stop believing anything Maddie says. They exchange ILY’s fairly quickly once they get together but it goes back and forth a lot. A guy talks to her, well then she MUST be sleeping with him. Gaslighting 1.0, jumping the gun,… it happens way too often in a short amount of time. The climax of the story made things between them blow up so fast and I cannot believe how quikckly his love turned into hate. And how much of her “friends” dropped her instantly.
I’m curious to see where this goes though so I’m hoping book two won’t take long.

Holy shit. This world is absolutely mind-boggling! McBride did a fantastic job of weaving the main character's world into her sister's. Her writing makes me want to dive into her brain to find all the other words she hasn't written yet.
Interesting concept, having twists and turns with a sort of familiar plot but that changes and has way more than you ever asked for. This book kept me engaged and reading nonstop. The cover is gorgeous. I love the characters, Madison and Madelaine are fantastic characters. This is the kind of book you need to read and experience it is worth it!

4.5 STARS.
I have so many words for this book. First off, WOW!! This book was so captivating from the very beginning. I was not expecting most of the twists and turns that this book provided.
I loved the development of not just Ryan and Maddie, but a lot of the side characters as well (Lainey, Bex, Linc, Court, Adam, Gary, etc.). While I didn't love all of them (LOOKING AT YOU GARY AND ADAM), I really felt like I knew a lot of information about all of them even given that they were side characters. I don't think I have had such hate towards characters as I do as some of these in this book (Lainey, Gary, Adam, Bry), but especially Gary. It's the actual worst human being I have ever read in a book.
Now let's talk about the main two - Maddie and Ryan. They couldn't be more opposite from beginning to end of this book. While Maddie could definitely hold her own, McBride really had you sympathizing with her for the majority of the book; rightfully so. She got the short end of the stick in the twin relationship. Now that she is given what looks like everything that anyone could ever want, it's worst case scenario for her by the end of the book.
Now onto Ryan... Ugh, Ryan. I had a love/hate relationship with Ryan the entire book. One of my main qualms about him was his short temper with everyone, but specifically Maddie, who didn't deserve what she got dished out from him. While I was SUPER invested in their love story once he knew who Maddie was, he was totally gaslighting her the second she didn't anything that he didn't like and I couldn't stand that. Maddie was put into an impossible situation and he just was not making it better for her by lashing out constantly.
The last 8% of the book was definitely the most thrilling and surprising. I was NOT expecting Ryan and Gary's reaction to everything (I had guessed that something was going to happen once she left the door unlocked for a few minutes, but I didn't think that it would have result in something SO consequential for Maddie). That one mistake was like the end all be all of her relationship and essentially her life.
I don't know how I am going to last another six-ish months until Book 2 comes out. I am all about the happily ever afters and I just need Ryan to get down on his knees (literally and figuratively) IMMEDIATELY and make things right with Maddie. And protect her from both of their fathers.
