I get the idea of the story and it is touching and emotional, as a mother. If taken literally, however, the book is pretty creepy and kind of awful. Not a happy children's story.

I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always.

Not that I'm nostalgic.

Though the story line does come across as a bit strange and part of you feels bad for this guys wife and kids at the end of the book as he leaves his family to go see his mother, this book was written originally not as a children's book but as a way for the author and his wife to get over her giving birth to two stillborn babies. From Munsch's website: "I made that up after my wife and I had two babies born dead. The song was my song to my dead babies. For a long time I had it in my head and I couldn’t even sing it because every time I tried to sing it I cried. It was very strange having a song in my head that I couldn’t sing."
So, maybe give it another read with the reasons it was written behind it and maybe you will see it in a different light.

Emotional and funny and lovely for kids and adults alike. Maybe my favorite baby book of all time. This one makes me teary-eyed to this day.

Even though this book makes me sad it will always be something that I remember my mom reading to me.
