I really struggled to get through this book because of how corny the plotline was. Would not recommend it, only finished it because I have a mental block against leaving books unfinished- the sunk cost fallacy strikes again. Seems like half the conversation/inner monologue in this book was characters saying "dammit!" and "what the devil!"- I'm talking DOZENS of times.
Any character development seemed unnatural, like they just suddenly developed out of nowhere- very inorganic. But again, my main problem was the absurdly corny plotlines. I know it's fiction, but everything was a stretch. Especially how all these grown men are obsessed with a long-dead woman named Cira and because Jane looks like Cira, they're obsessed with her too.

I really like Jane better than I like Eve and these last two books that centered more around her have been some of my favorites by Iris Johansen thus far. I enjoy the suspense, the various characters, the interlocking pieces that she creates as you read.

Blind Alley and Countdown really confused me. The first 4 books seem to have a reasonable timeline, then we get to book 5 and it seems like way too much time has passed and the characters are different. This book get the same way. Too much “book time” has passed and it feels like part of the story is missing. I’m invested now, but Johansen and her editors are not great with these timelines and continuity of character.

It's been a while since I read this book, but I want to get all my reviews completed. It was also one of the earlier thrillers that I've read. I think this one was promoted back in the day as something almost Dan Brown-ish since it has something to do with a very old and powerful secret, but I don't think that makes any sense really.

Chronologically this follows a few years after the event in Blind Alley, which I read after this one, and which is not a good idea. The story wasn't particularly special and neither were the characters, but hey, I've read two more of her books since, so it wasn't too bad. A small side note that I would like to make is that however, I had read far less books at the times and have become much more critical, that's why I'm not 100% sure I would still have enjoyed it.

Note: I read a Dutch translation of this book.
