That was definitely one of the better memoirs I've read. It was open and honest and comforting. I never felt like she was pandering or bragging or complaining about anything. After reading this, I want to be her best friend. She seems open minded and accepting and silly and all around lovely. I also loved the essay structure, and how she incorporated her songs to tell a larger story and address deeper issues. Just great. Also, it's super short, which is sometimes a good thing.
After seeing her on the Tony Awards and recently in the televised production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and living the songs in the Broadway musical Waitress, I thought I'd learn a bit in her memoir. It's not an extraordinary book, but it does capture her sense of humor and the struggle to be your own person in the music industry.

I was a little nervous to read Sara's book because though she's a great singer and a great artist, I wasn't sure how she'd be as an author, and I realize now it was silly to have doubts. The book was so perfectly Sara. It gave us a deeper glimpse into who she is as an artist, and more importantly as a person.
Rarely will you find a more honest and endearing musician. Just when I thought I could not love Sara Bareilles anymore, she taught me how.
This is one of the few books I want to take with me everywhere I go.

I listened to audio book which features the talented singer highlighting her short essays with songs. Though I am a fan of her Broadway work it felt like this series of essays was forced. Indeed the first piece was all about her writers block. I'm so tired of this trope. Perhaps once it was cheeky to complain about feeling pressure to meet your writers deadline; now it feels pretentious. Get over yourself. She is sweet and talented. And should focus her gifts on her songwriting.

I enjoyed the format where each essay begins with a song that Bareilles wrote. Many of the stories, particularly the ones that focus on her childhood and early career are very relatable and she is really honest about her own failures and growing pains. Overall, a pleasant read.
