I have loved her since 2007. I have her piano books and her albums. Even a tee shirt or two! I've been to two of her concerts. It was so fun to get into her mind and hear the stories from her life that inspired her artistry. A great read.

It turns out that most of this was covered in Tom Ashbrook's excellent interview with Bareilles on WBUR the day before the book's release. Being such a fan, however, I had to buy this slim volume. It was a good excuse to get out on this beautiful day, and I never mind a trip to Wellesley Books. Having read what I'd already listened to wasn't all bad, just as listening once again to her songs just makes one appreciate Bareilles's talent all the more.

I listened to the audiobook, and it is great! It's poignant yet funny. I seriously laughed out loud several times. Listening to this made me want to give Sara a hug.

This is a fun read if you like her work, and she is very inspiring. It can be a little repetitive on her self doubting, but that's life. Very insightful to see where some of her biggest songs come from.

I was talking to someone recently about how dangerous it is to dig deeper and learn about the people who create the things you love, because it's hard when you can't love them and it changes the way you love their stuff. The flip side of that, though, is how magical and good it feels to learn that the people behind the stuff you love are just what you hoped they would be, that they do ~get it (get you, you sad confused 20-something) the way it seemed like they must. This book is like that.

With a clear-eyed unbiased view, this is maybe not a "true 5 star" book, but it was exactly what I needed at exactly this time in my life, and that matters. The essays are warm and open-hearted and sometimes really tough (like her songs! sounds like her! get it). I felt like I was getting to know one of my faves a little better and also like I'm not doing so bad and it's probably going to be okay. I don't know. This book held my heart. (corny!!!!!!)

Speaking of, I might subtract half a star for none of the essays centering on songs from Kaleidoscope Heart, clearly Sara's masterpiece.

I'm proud to be a fan who has loved her music from the first single. I enjoyed getting to know her more and I definitely take comfort in her words and encouragements.
