I gotta admit, I really connected with the first nerd padawan ever, Reath. A dude that would rather read in the Jedi archives than go have adventures (though a Jedi craves not these things) on the frontier? That's my kinda guy! Of course he goes and handles himself quiet well but still. Scholar Jedi!
It dovetails nicely into the new High Republic series and even mentions The Great Disaster depicted in The Light of the Jedi, since Reath is Jora Mali's padawan. It is cataloged as a YA book in most cases so it's a lighter read than The Light of the Jedi. With the exception of the seemingly tacked-on flashback, I enjoyed it. Now for some notes-cum-spoilers:
I never thought that Dez died but I didn't see his basically becoming a meditating monk after being rescued. The twist works, though, he was the adventure-seeking former padawan of Jora and has his character arc towards introspection where the other former padawan of Jori, Reath, finds he can do the whole adventure thing.
I think Orla and her Wayfinder path is them putting a name to the thing that Asokha Tano did in the Clone Wars. I like it. There shouldn't just be Jedi and Sith. There should be unaffiliated but acknowledged, Force users.

So this is one of my favorite books ever. I love the story and the climax. It is an amazing first young adult entry into the High Republic.
I have seen some people complaining about the High Republic and the authors, but I have meet some of them and they are amazing people. I want everyone to know that I would say that all of these books are worth the read. Especially, if you have never read any Star Wars books before.
10 out of 10 would recommend.

Looking forward to the next one! As time went on with the audiobook i got more and more invested into the story, especially with the ending

Wow - I blazed through this one. Claudia Gray delivers again.
The combination of the character development , tie in to the other High Republic book, as well as just the new perspective that’s brought to the Star Wars Universe (Jedi Order, Outer Rim/Frontier, Ancient Tech to name a few) made this adventure a 5/5 for me. Claudia Gray has a real knack for creating works that are hard to put down.
