Some characters were still great and some characters still sucked, and that's all I'm going say about that. The action scenes were still amazing, as was the political climate (although I found some part of this repetitive as well). I'm still looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy but this one definitely suffered from second book syndrome!

There were plot twists within plot twists, and a lot happened to move the story along—there really aren't any dull moments here. I still love Annie and Lee, though I will say that Lee made some annoying choices in this one, and I was kinda glad that we didn't get his POV as much, thanks to the new POV character, Griff. I loved Griff and his whole story (Delo...), and I loved that his perspective gave us a new perspective on the war too, so the story could move beyond the one country of Callipolis. Also it brought more dragons!! And the dragons definitely feature more in this book than in the first.
Annie is still my favorite character, and I loved her growth in this book. Her struggles, her quiet resilience, the choices she's forced to make—I just love her so much. Also, I'm ready for Crissa to have her own POV because she was a real MVP for most of the book and she deserves it.
So basically, no middle-book syndrome here. And of course the cliffhanger ending I did not see coming—book three doesn't come out till next year and color me very upset about this fact!

Also, I was worried I wouldn't remember enough of the first book, meaning I would be lost in this one. But I most definitely wasn't! I was pleased with how the beginning helped to remind the reader what happened at the end of the first book. If you're looking for great YA about dragons, I definitely recommend this one!
